Dreams Sugar Bay, St Thomas 2015

Client Review

The physical property is very nice.  The location is wonderful; right on the bay looking across to St. John and Jost Van Dyke.  A five-dollar cab ride of no more than ten minutes gets you to the ferry to St. John.  That ferry ride is $7 each way, and lasts about fifteen minutes.  The airport ride is around a half hour and costs $15 each way.  Downtown to the capital is about twenty minutes at a cost of $10 each way.  We found the downtown to be not much to our liking.  It is quite crowded with lots of people hawking their wares on the streets.  There are many, many jewelry stores with good pricing due to the duty free nature of the island.

The food at Sugar Bay was good.  There are five restaurants on the property with each having a different theme and menu.  Due to the rehabbing of the facility the restaurant by the pool and beach is not fully open.  There is limited seating there, but plenty if the weather is nice.

The rehabilitation of the facility is not yet complete.  We were told that the delay from the 12/31/14 promised completion is due to not receiving the necessary material, which needs to come from the USA mainland by ship.  The work that has been completed is very nice.   It appears that the completion of everything will take another year.  That work did not interfere with anything that we did in the areas that are now completed.  Our room was a deluxe ocean view on the seventh floor, and it was perfect including a small balcony with table and chairs.  The bathroom is split into two rooms, which makes things quite convenient.  Our mini-bar was stocked every day, and more non-alcoholic beverages were always available at the shop in the main facility.  Lots of fruit drinks were available at the four bars most of the time, and certainly during all hours that most people will find to be normal hours for the consumption of such drinks.  Those drinks were also available without alcohol.  Much of the alcohol was name brand stuff.  Our stay was all-inclusive, and we lacked for nothing.

The swimming pools and beach are a less than five minute shuttle ride from the main facility.  That shuttle ran reliably about every five minutes.  The swimming pools are sort of together, but require getting out of one to get to another.  We found that a bit inconvenient, but easy enough to deal with.  The pool temperature was a bit on the cool side.  The ocean water at the beach was a fair amount warmer.  The beach is fairly nice.  It’s all sandy with lots of lunges.  The ocean bottom at the beach is a bit rocky, but not to the exclusion of its use.

We cannot say enough good about the people working at the resort.  All who we interacted with were very helpful and friendly.  Many were extremely outgoing, and we enjoyed talking with them and learning about their lives.

The resort offers tours and excursions for an additional cost.  We took an all day tour of St. John, which included a look at the island with stops at the visitor center for the National Park, a local bakery, lunch, snorkeling at Trunk Bay and a small shopping complex at Cruz Bay.  Trunk Bay is touted as the third best beach in the Caribbean.  That may or may not be true, but it is surely a beautiful beach with superb snorkeling.  That trip was $130 and took all day to late afternoon.  Our very best day was an all day catamaran trip to the British Virgin Island of Jost Van Dyke.  The trip cost $125, but required an additional $40 for British customs.  A passport was required.  It included continental breakfast on the boat, about an hour of snorkeling, lunch (cost not included) at  the iconic Foxy’s, swimming and shopping with a stroll along the beautiful beach lined with shops and bars.  The captain of the boat was a local guy and the two deck hands were a young guy and gal who are US mainland citizens.  Such very nice young people made an already great trip all the better.  You can find more about this and other available sails at:  http://daydreamervi.com/daysailing.htm#fullbvisail.

Our overall grade for Dreams Sugar Bay is currently B+, and that is only because the rehabilitation is not yet complete.  When done it will be fabulous.  We agreed that our week on St. Thomas was at least as good as our week last year at Hawaii.  It may have even been better.
